Amid rising Covid-19 cases and hit by vaccine scarcity, Andhra Pradesh has sent an SOS to the Centre asking for 1 crore vaccine doses on an urgent basis.

Andhra Pradesh government has asked the Centre to release 1 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine immediately.

A top health official in Andhra Pradesh has said currently the state has only 3.7 lakh doses available while its consumption per day is 1.3 lakh doses. The requirement could be even more but is being constrained by the scarcity of vaccine doses.

The official further said that the government fears Andhra Pradesh could run out of vaccine by Thursday. Already Nellore and West Godavari districts have run out of vaccine.

Apart from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra has also sent a similar SOS to the Centre saying the available vaccine doses in the state will run out in 3 days.

The number of new coronavirus cases in India hit a record daily high since the outbreak of the pandemic with over 1.15 lakh new infections being reported in a span of 24 hours, pushing the nationwide Covid-19 tally to 1,28,01,785, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

The single-day rise in coronavirus cases breached the 1-lakh mark for the second time in three days.

A total of 1,66,177 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 56,330 from Maharashtra, 12,804 from Tamil Nadu, 12,696 from Karnataka, 11,113 from Delhi, 10,355 from West Bengal, 8,924 from Uttar Pradesh and 7,251 from Andhra Pradesh and 7,216 from Punjab.

The demands for more vaccine doses come at a time when Centre has asked all states and Union Territories to start vaccination of all aged above 45 years. Meanwhile, calls for making vaccines available for all adults above 18 years have grown over the past few weeks as the country sees a record surge in Covid-19 cases.
