The line-up of web series to be released this year is impressive.

The 2021 cultural calendar remains dotted with question marks due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, and while there’s a vaccine-shaped light at the end of the tunnel, one can’t really predict how long and winding that tunnel will be. So, till the time we continue with our drawn-out return to something, anything resembling normalcy, we can surely find some comfort and entertainment in good web series. We bring you a list of 21 promising shows that we can’t wait to watch this year.

TANDAV

The political drama boasts of a stellar star cast that includes Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, among others. Set in Delhi, Tandav promises to take the viewers inside the closed, chaotic corridors of power and unmask the manipulations and carried out by power-hungry people. The nine-episode series will premiere on January 15 on Amazon Prime Video.

THE FAMILY MAN SEASON 2

The Family Man garnered immense success with its season 1 and is all set to return with a lot more action, thrills and twists. Releasing on Amazon Prime Video on February 12, The Family Man Season 2 stars Manoj Bajpayee, Sharib Hashmi, Priyamani, Sharad Kelkar, Gul Panag, Shreya Dhanwanthary and Samantha Akkineni. Viewers can’t wait for the mystery of first season’s finale episode to unravel.

LOKI

Everyone’s favorite bad guy from the Marvel universe will be back to enthral us again. Though Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War, a different version of Loki was introduced during several time-hopping sequences of Avengers: Endgame. That parallel universe Loki is now off to have his own adventures. Owen Wilson and Gugu Mbatha-Raw will be seen with Tom Hiddleston in the show.

LORD OF THE RINGS

Shrouded in mystery, not much of the actual plot of Lord of the Rings series is known. Based on JRR Tolkien’s novels, the show will take place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings film trilogies. Since the Second Age is most notable for seeing the rise of Sauron and his creation of the One Ring, the series has created a lot of buzz.

MUMBAI DIARIES 26/11

Amazon Prime Video’s Mumbai Diaries 26/11 is all set to show a fictionalised version of the terror attacks that took place in on November 26, 2008 Mumbai from the viewpoint of doctors, nurses, paramedics and hospital staff. It’s an ode to those who worked tirelessly to save lives during those days. The medical drama features Konkona Sen Sharma and Mohit Raina in lead roles.

DELHI CRIME SEASON 2

Starring Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal and Rajesh Tailang, among others, Netflix’s Delhi Crime is based on a horrific gang rape case in Delhi. The series follows the national capital’s police force as it investigates and finds the perpetrators of the heinous crime. The hard-hitting series even won International Emmy Award in the Best Drama category.

AARYA SEASON 2

Sushmita Sen made an impressive digital debut with Aarya on Disney+Hotstar. Based on the Dutch series Penoza, Aarya’s determination to protect her family along with her reluctance to break bad in a crime family earns the series a special edge. Directed by Ram Madhvani, the show also stars Chandrachur Singh, Sikander Kher, Ankut Bhatia, Namit Das and Manish Choudhary, among others.

ASUR SEASON 2

Featuring Arshad Warsi and Barun Sobti, Asur combined the genres mythological fiction and thriller. Based in Varanasi, the Voot series follows Barun Sobti who returns to CBI to solve a case involving a dangerous killer. For this, he reunites with his former mentor played Arshad Warsi and the duo try to get hold of the eponymous ‘Asur’ who lurks in the darkness.

GULLAK SEASON 2

TVF’s heartwarming web series is back with its second season to win the audiences all over again. The show found popularity because of its relatable content. After all, isn’t a bickering family and never-ending hassles the story of every middle class family? Gullak 2 promises to make us laugh with a dose of nostalgia and will start streaming on Sony Liv from January 15.

BOMBAY BEGUMS

Bombay Begums comes with a formidable cast which includes names like Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash and Plabita Borthakur. The series is being helmed by Lipstick Under My Burkha famed Alankrita Srivastava. Its synopsis reads, “The ambitions, frailties and love lives of contemporary women take centre-stage when four fearless women and a young teen are thrown together in the workplace.”

MADE IN HEAVEN SEASON 2

Created by Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti, Made in Heaven, captured the attention of the audiences for its striking content. Through a wedding agency catering to the upper class, the Amazon Prime Video series offered a glimpse into the lives of the elites residing in Delhi. What made the show riveting was the web of dark truths and hypocrisy beyond the glistening exteriors of their lives. Surely second season is much anticipated.

THE TEST CASE SEASON 2

The first season of The Test Case featured Nimrat Kaur as Captain Shikha Sharma and received a lot of acclaim upon its release. The second season is returning with Harleen Sethi in the lead role and she will portray the character of a courageous and fierce army officer. The release date of the series is yet to be announced.

WANDAVISION

The Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to life with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as they reprise their characters of Scarlet Witch and Vision, respectively. The story transports the duo to some sort of suburban alternate reality where their goofy neighbor Kathryn Hahn stalks them at every turn.

COWBOY BEBOP

This highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of the iconic anime series of the same name stars John Cho. The beloved Japanese series was about bounty hunters tracking down the solar system’s greatest criminals.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins’ long-awaited adaptation of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning Colson Whitehead novel will finally land on Amazon Prime Video this year. The semi-fantastical story follows a slave named Cora as she escapes to the North taking a literal underground railroad.

INVENTING ANNA

Julia Garner, Anna Chlumsky and Laverne Cox star in this Shonda Rhimes production. The series is about real-life con artist Anna Delvey, who successfully manipulated high-profile insiders in New York’s party scene to fund her lavish lifestyle.

JEET KI ZIDD

Based on the life of Major Deependra Singh Sengar, the show stars Amit Sadh in the role of a Kargil war hero. He struggles with his disability and eventually overcomes many hurdles, never letting his physical weaknesses overpower his spirit, all because he wants to serve the nation.

FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER

Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as Captain America’s best friends and sidekicks in this series. They fight crime after Steve Rogers decides to retire. Daniel Br¼hl, the baddie from Captain America: Civil War, returns as the villain Baron Zemo and Emily VanCamp returns as Sharon Carter.

NINE PERFECT STRANGERS

Nine Perfect Strangers is based on Liane Moriarty’s 2018 novel of the same name. It follows nine Australians from different walks of life to an expensive 10-day mind and body transformational retreat at a place called Tranquillum House, which is run by a mysterious Russian woman named Masha. The show's cast includes Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, Michael Shannon, Manny Jacinto, Regina Hall, Bobby Cannavale and more.

STATION ELEVEN

The post-apocalyptic limited drama series is based on Emily St. John Mandel’s bestseller of the same name. Starring Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, David Wilmot and Nabhaan Rizwan, among others, the series depicts the aftermath of a flu pandemic which wipes out the majority of the world’s population. Who knew there would actually be a pandemic!

THE LADY AND THE DALE

The Lady and the Dale is about Liz Carmichael, who introduced a fuel-efficient vehicle during the 1970s gas crisis. As she wins over world-renowned carmakers and investors, a web of mystery unfolds regarding the car's technology and the woman’s surprising past. Aren't scam stories always interesting?
