Farmer Protest Updates: First day's 'Kisan Parliament' ends; 200 farmers to come tomorrow again

The protesting farmers ended the first day of their 'Kisan Parliament' on Thursday at around 4 pm. 200 farmers will assemble at Jantar Mantar on Friday again as they plan to protest everyday during the monsoon session of the Parliament.

"Don't term them farmers, they are 'Mawali'. The country knows what happened on January 26," BJP MP from New Delhi constituency Meenakashi Lekhi says.

"The government is not listening to farmers. This government is autocratic. The opposition will continue to raise issue," says Shiromani Akali Dal's Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

New Delhi BJP MP Meenakashi Lekhi said that those who are protesting are not farmers. "They are pursuing a political agenda which has nothing to do with farmers' interests. Somehow, they are defending middlemen's interests. So stop calling them farmers," she said.

Over 200 protesting farmers have launched an agitation at Jantar Mantar where they are holding a 'Kisaan Parliament' parallelly to the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Farmers begin 'Kisaan Parliament' at Jantar Mantar after paying respects to the 500 farmers who have lost their lives during the prolonged agitation at the Delhi borders.

Buses carrying farmers arrive at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The protesting farmers will agitate against the Centre's three farm laws amid the ongoing Parliament session. BKU leader Rakesh Tikait has also reached Jantar Mantar.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar says, “The country has witnessed that these farm laws are beneficial and are in favour of the farmers. We have had discussions about these laws. If they express their issues with the laws point-wise, we can discuss it.”

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has said, “We are ready to talk to the farmers and we have been talking in the past as well. Modi government is a farmer-friendly government.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is protesting along with other MPs in support of the farmers at the Parliament House.

Farmers have left for their protest against the Centre's agri laws at Jantar Mantar. Adequate security arrangements have been made and police and paramilitary personnel deployed.

"Parliament is just 150 metres away from Jantar Mantar. We will hold our own Parliament sessions there. What do we have to do with hooliganism? Are we miscreants," asks BKU Leader Rakesh Tikait on being asked about arrangements to tackle situations like Jan 26 Red Fort violence.

Congress MPs Deepender Singh Hooda and Pratap Singh Bajwa have given a Suspension of Business notice under rule 267 on the issue of farmer's agitation.

Parvinder Singh, DCP, Outer District, said, “We have placed preventive arrangements to avoid the entry of any miscreant at the Tikri border. The arrangement has been put in place as the farmers haven't received permission to hold protest here.”

Thousands of farmers from across the country have been agitating at three Delhi border points -- Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur -- against the three farm laws that they claim will do away with the minimum support price system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations. Over 10 rounds of talks with the government, which has been projecting the laws at major agricultural reforms, have failed to break the deadlock between the two sides.
