K-pop group GOT7’s Youngjae on his 2nd EP Sugar, discussing with members, Indian Aghases | Exclusive

K-pop group GOT7 member Youngjae delivers a sweet music video for ‘Sugar’, the lead single from his sophomore EP Sugar. The young vocalist dropped his extended play, Sugar, on June 21, 2022, where Youngjae takes a detour from singing ballads and shows off his full vocal range. He is the first member of GOT7 to release an EP, right after the group made a comeback with a self-titled album, including the lead single, NANANA. Youngjae started off as a soloist by showing different colours to him with his EP, Colors from Ars — Youngjae’s composer name which means: "Art is long, Life is short—.” He has now moved on to tapping a more fun side to him, dabbling with R&B, and rock with Sugar.

India Today got to chat with Youngjae exclusively about his musical journey and how he keeps reinventing himself. Unlike Colors from Ars, Sugar shows a more confident side to Youngjae. Ask him if this is a result of his first EP being received well, the powerhouse of talent tells India Today, “I'm just trying to do better at what I want to do instead of feeling pressured!”

The music video for Vibin' was more about living in the moment, while Sugar is more colourful. The mini-album has 5 songs [Crema, Nothing, With You, Sugar, and Focus]. What made Sugar qualify to be the title track? Youngjae answers, “The reason the title song is Sugar is because it is the most popular in my opinion.”

Explaining his process of working on the album, Youngjae recounts that he first worked on the theme for the album. “I think I remembered the topic! First we worked on the theme and then the lyrics. The work on melody came last. This is how the work was done!!” He also adds, “I ate a lot of sweets while working.”

GOT7 MEMBER ON TRAINING HIS VOCALS

Youngjae is known to be the king of vocals in GOT7. However, the singer believes in ‘practice makes you perfect.’ He says, “I took vocal lessons yesterday too! I still want to do well, and I keep practicing doing well.”

He also emphasises that as an artist he is never satisfied with his work as he always wants to do better. “I'm not very satisfied with it [what I produce], but I think the most important thing is to be satisfied with yourself. I think the most important thing is whether the listeners like the song or not.”

YOUNGJAE ON GOT7 AND BOND WITH MEMBERS

GOT7 is one of the rare groups in K-pop that have managed to retain their spot despite their departure from long-time label JYP Entertainment in 2021. They continue to remain close-knit as a group. Youngjae reveals sharing the deets of his mini-album with the members earlier, but has stopped now. He jokes, “To be honest, I told them [GOT7 members] before, but they keep giving spoilers, so I don't tell them.”

GOT7 members, who have individual accounts on social media, are always seen cheering for each other. Ask Youngjae if he misses working with them, the K-pop star says, “The members I always miss and I always want to be with them.”

He refuses to differentiate between Youngjae of GOT7 and Youngjae of Ars. The K-pop star exclaims, “I feel both are gifted. I don't want to divide it into two, it feels like there are two inclinations.”

YOUNGJAE- THE ACTOR

Youngjae also made his acting debut with a Netflix sitcom, So Not Worth it. He says being a singer has helped him express himself better as an actor. “It's probably because I'm a singer, I can express better. A singer must be able to sing and express themselves directly and that helps with acting a lot,” the idol-turned-actor reiterates.

In one of the interviews, Youngjae speaks about not being keen on doing a romantic show, unlike his colleague and friend Jinyoung, who is currently being seen in Yumi’s Cells 2. However, if an opportunity came by, would he be up for it? Youngjae asserts, “It seems that I'm not ready, but I am confident that I will do very well if I bump into it.”

ON VISITING INDIA AND MESSAGE FOR AGHASES

Lastly, GOT7 members, Jackson Wang and Park Jinyoung have spoken about their love for Bollywood films and India. Does he have any plans to visit India? The young star says he is keen on visiting India and meeting the Aghases here. He concludes, “If I watch a lot of YouTube, there are so many pretty places and delicious food [from India], so I want to go to meet Indian Aghases as soon as possible and perform in a place and enjoy it together.”
